V60 Pourover

The pour over really shows the true notes of a particular coffee. This process can look a little daunting, but we promise its easier than it seems. A pour over will bring out the floral and fruity notes in a coffee, and make for a smooth cup. There are multiple pour over devices available such and each have their own process. For this method, we re using a V60 device.

You’ll need some things:

V60 Pour-over Device

Kettle

Paper Filter

Scale

Burr Coffee Grinder

Coffee Scoop

Eiland Coffee

Your Favorite Mug (must be your favorite)

Start by heating water in the kettle to 205 degrees.

Pictured above is a 16 ounce carafe, so we will be using 30 grams of coffee (if you are wanting to make a different amount, use the ratio of 3 grams of coffee to 50 grams of water)

Use warm water to rinse your paper filter, discard warm water. This will get rid of the paper taste that some paper filters can have.

Grind your coffee to the consistency of sand, or table salt. Put ground coffee in the wet filter. Be sure to even out your grounds, this will help to make sure all of your coffee gets saturated by the hot water. Put the entire setup on your scale, and tare everything.

You will be using the scale to weigh the water as you pour, this will indicate when to stop each pour.

Once your water is ready, Pour 60 grams of water, (or twice the weight of coffee) in a spiral to saturate all of the grounds. Give the grounds a stir to ensure that all the coffee gets watered. Let the coffee sit for 45 seconds, allow it to bloom.

After the 45 seconds is up, resume pouring in a spiral pattern until you reach 300 grams. Your coffee should “bloom” as your pour. This term refers to the CO2 inside the coffee being released to create bubbles. Let the coffee sit for 1 minute when you reach 300 grams.

When the 1 minute is up, begin again and add water until you reach 400 grams. This is the second to last pass, let the coffee sit again for 1 minute.

When the minute is up, pour the last 100 grams of water. Let the coffee sit again until the timer hits 5 minutes. This is the last pour!

Pour and drink that goodness!

You can really use whatever coffee you like. We really love the Ethiopia, Costa Rica, or Kenya. These coffees have great fruity notes for a pour over. Remember its important to find what you like. If you like stronger coffee, use a a few extra grams. Its important to find what your preference and stick with it.
